Tutor's Story - Gauri

Gauri joined us as a first year PPE undergraduate at LSE. She joined Team Up in March 2021 and has since worked on two programmes, and completed Bronze and Silver SSAT awards.

We asked her to share more about her experience tutoring with Team Up:

“As a tutor, I appreciate the positive impact we can have on our students, and this was a compelling motivation for joining Team Up. Especially since many of the students I have worked with come from underprivileged backgrounds, I find tutoring rewarding as well as enjoyable.”

At Harris Academy, I worked with students who are preparing to sit their GCSEs next year. Due to Covid-19, their education has unfortunately suffered disruptions throughout the year, making extra maths tuition more crucial. The pupils approached each lesson with determination and adaptability, with no complaints for any technological problems they faced. At Sacred Heart High School, my pupils were younger and less confident in maths. However, their attitudes towards each other and their learning never wavered: always kind and eager, they were a pleasure to teach! All my students showed a great deal of maturity in engaging with online learning, and attended every session punctually and ready to learn.

The most enjoyable aspect from my tutoring is watching the pupils develop both academically and personally. Often, students who lack confidence in their mathematical ability can begin programmes quite shy and uncertain. The visible improvement in all my pupils as the programmes ended illuminated their hard work and persistence. They each became more comfortable during tuition and their mathematical ability was stronger. As their confidence in maths grew, it was pleasing to witness their eagerness and desire to learn also increase.

“Programme management has run seamlessly from start to finish. The curriculum resources and training modules available to tutors have helped me prepare my lessons the best I can. Working and sharing experiences with other tutors on the same programme also creates a collaborative atmosphere that promotes positivity.”

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Team Up and hope to continue being a part of their team! The benefits I have received are both personal and professional. The confidence with which I tutor and engage with other tutors on my programme has improved markedly, and I take pride in my work being genuinely beneficial for my pupils. Professionally, I have gained skills and SSAT leadership awards that put me in good stead for future work. The calibre of the tuition I deliver has also improved through greater experience and the detailed feedback on tutoring technique I received from my Programme Manager’s observations.

I would highly recommend tutoring with Team Up. I found my programmes fulfilling and fun, and have learned a great deal from my time with Team Up. As a university student, I found the programmes easy to incorporate into my weekly timetable, especially since they were very well organised.

On behalf of the Team Up team and pupils, we say: Thank you Gauri!
